I have installed openvpn client Tunnelblick and uploaded my the configuration files in a rather arcane process and I have also connected via PPTP through Mac Preferences/network. While on my home wifi I seem to be able to connect to my NAS via both webdav and AFP (is that what it's called or SMB?).
I have followed both guides and have successfully enabled webdav on the NAS and connected to it through finder/go/connect to server.
